Frequently Asked Questions

How long are therapy sessions?

Sessions run for 50 minutes which is the industry standard and considered a therapeutic hour.

How many sessions do I need?

This answer depends on a number of factors such as your needs, preferences, presenting issues, commitment, and finances. The number of sessions will be discussed with you during the first session and your therapist will check in throughout the course of therapy to evaluate your goals, progress, and satisfaction. Together, you will decide on an appropriate termination date.

Is therapy covered?

Our services are covered by most extended health care plans. However, we recommend that you contact your insurance provider to inquire about your coverage for a psychologist and for a psychotherapist working under the supervision of a registered psychologist. It is important to ask your provider how much per person per calendar year is available to you and whether there is a maximum coverage amount per session.

What are your fees?

Fees range between $175 and $250 per therapy session. Fees for psychological assessments depend on the complexity of the case and will be discussed with you directly.

What is your availability?

Availability varies by therapist. We offer day, evening, and weekend appointments.

Is your intern qualified to provide therapy?

Yes! Our interns have completed the necessary coursework that prepares them to provide psychotherapy. Our interns work under the direct supervision of an experienced Registered Psychologist, and participate in Centre Wellness' carefully developed internship program which provides training and learning opportunities above and beyond their school's requirements. We require all clients interested in seeing an intern to complete an appointment request form which allows us to ensure that the intern has the necessary training and supervision to provide therapy for the specific issues the client is seeking support for.

Do interns have any experience providing therapy?

Interns come to us with all different levels of training and experience. Some interns have previous therapy experience in other training programs or practicums. Other interns are earlier in their career development with minimal or no prior therapy experience. It is important to remember that every intern has been approved by their training program to begin their internship, they have successfully completed the interview and preparation process, and have registered as qualifying members of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. We celebrate all of our interns and warmly remember that we all started with a first client.

Do I have to consent to video or audio recording of sessions?

No. You are not required to consent to video or audio recording of sessions. However, there are specific benefits associated with recording of sessions for both you and our intern. Specifically, recorded sessions are diligently reviewed by both the intern and the intern's supervisor, and discussed in depth within supervision. The opportunity to review a session in such detail allows the supervisor to provide more specific direction and recommendations for treatment that are tailored specifically to you. It also provides a richer more active learning opportunity for our intern, helping them to identify areas for improvement and refine their clinical skills. Session recording as a training requirement is a long-time practice among the most esteemed clinical programs.

Do I have to consent to live observation by the supervisor?

Live observation is an essential part of clinical training and part of our internship program. It is important to understand that you are technically the supervisor's client and that they may like to meet you from time to time. The purpose of live observation is to give the supervisor the opportunity to assess the intern's use and application of clinical skills. Live observation is randomly scheduled throughout the program. You will be informed ahead of time if the supervisor would like to join for a portion of your session. It is also entirely possible that you may never see or meet the supervisor. We appreciate your openness to participate in the professional growth and development of a new therapist.

What is the rate for therapy provided by an intern?

The rate for our intern is $100 per 50 minute session. This fee reflects the intern's level of skills and training, and covers the cost of supervision, program oversight, additional clinical training, and administrative support. The low-cost rate acknowledges the additional contribution of the client in participating in live observation and video or audio recording of sessions to enhance the intern's training and experience.

Is therapy with an intern covered by my benefits?

Our intern works under the direct supervision of a Registered Psychologist, and therefore the service is a psychological service. It is the client's responsibility to check their policy to ensure supervised services are covered and obtain information regarding maximum amount per session and per year.
