Narrative Therapy

therapeutic APPROACH

Transforming your story.

What is Narrative Therapy?

Rooted in the belief that these narratives shape our identity and influence our experiences, Narrative Therapy helps clients explore and reframe their personal stories in a way that aligns with their values and strengths.

By externalizing problems and viewing them as separate from the individual, clients can gain new perspectives, challenge limiting beliefs, and create a more empowering narrative that fosters resilience and growth.

Narrative Therapy is a collaborative and empowering approach to psychotherapy that focuses on the stories we tell about our lives.

How Can Narrative Therapy Help?

Narrative Therapy helps individuals by encouraging them to re-author their life stories, transforming narratives of pain, struggle, or limitation into ones of strength, possibility, and hope.

The therapy provides a space for clients to critically examine the dominant stories in their lives—often shaped by societal expectations, cultural norms, or past experiences—and to identify alternative stories that better reflect their true selves and aspirations.

What Conditions Does Narrative Therapy Treat?

Depression

Narrative Therapy helps clients uncover and reshape the stories of hopelessness or inadequacy that contribute to depressive symptoms.

Anxiety

By externalizing anxiety and exploring the narratives around it, clients can reduce its power and develop new ways of responding to stress.

Trauma

Narrative Therapy provides a framework for individuals to reframe traumatic experiences, separating the trauma from their identity and promoting healing.

Identity Issues

Clients struggling with identity can explore and re-author stories about themselves, fostering a stronger sense of self and purpose.

Relationship Issues

By examining and reworking the narratives that shape their relationships, clients can improve communication and deepen connections with others.

3. Re-authoring the Narrative

What Should I Expect in Session?

The final phase focuses on identifying and developing alternative stories that better reflect your values, strengths, and aspirations. Your therapist will support you in re-authoring your narrative, empowering you to create a new story that fosters resilience, empowerment, and meaningful change.

1. Exploring the Narrative

2. Externalizing the Problem

In this phase, you and your therapist will work to separate the problem from your identity, viewing it as an external entity rather than an inherent part of you. This process helps you gain perspective and reduces the influence of the problem on your life.

In the initial phase, your therapist will invite you to share the stories that have shaped your life. This involves exploring key events, themes, and dominant narratives that influence your self-concept and behaviours.
