Emotion-Focused Therapy

therapeutic APPROACH

Using the gift of emotion to guide healing.

What is Emotion-Focused Therapy?

Grounded in the understanding that emotions are central to our identity and drive our behaviours, EFT helps clients explore, experience, understand, accept, and transform their emotional experiences.

By working through emotional pain, clients can access deeper feelings, leading to a greater understanding of themselves and more authentic, meaningful connections with others.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is a humanistic and experiential, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy that emphasizes the importance of emotions in human functioning and change.

How Can Emotion-Focused Therapy Help?

EFT is designed to help individuals access and process their emotions within a supportive and empathetic therapeutic relationship. The therapy posits that emotional avoidance or unprocessed feelings often underlie psychological distress.

By creating a safe space where clients can fully experience their emotions, EFT facilitates corrective emotional experiences—moments where clients can safely express and reprocess feelings that were previously ignored or misunderstood.

What Conditions does EFT Treat?

Depression

EFT helps clients explore and resolve underlying emotional pain, leading to improved mood and a reduction in depressive symptoms.

Anxiety

By addressing fears and unresolved emotions, EFT can reduce anxiety and promote a sense of inner calm.

Interpersonal Issues

EFT enhances emotional awareness and communication, helping couples and individuals improve their relationships and resolve conflicts.

Trauma

EFT facilitates the processing of traumatic emotions, allowing individuals to heal and integrate their experiences.

Grief and Loss:

EFT provides a space to fully process and express emotions related to loss, promoting healing and acceptance.

3. Transformation and Healing:

What Should I Expect in Session?

You will work on the integration of new emotional experiences into your sense of self. Your therapist will help you solidify these changes, empowering you to apply your newfound emotional understanding to your relationships and daily life, fostering ongoing personal growth.

1. Emotional Awareness and Exploration:

Your therapist will help you identify and become more aware of your emotions. This process involves exploring your feelings in a safe and non-judgmental environment, allowing you to understand the deeper emotional patterns influencing your behaviour.

2. Emotional Processing:

You will work with your therapist to process and make sense of your emotions. Through guided techniques, you’ll learn to express and transform difficult emotions, moving from distress and avoidance to acceptance and healing.
