3. Build new ways of being

How Does it Work?

Our therapists support you as you practice communication, negotiation, empathy, and boundaries. This may include learning how to express needs safely, support each other effectively, and make decisions that honour both partners.

1. Understanding and relief

We start by listening to what brings you in.  This first step is about creating space for both partners to feel seen, heard, and understood. For many, even this initial conversation can bring a sense of relief and renewed possibility.

2. Understanding Patterns Together

Together, we explore recurring cycles, misunderstandings, or unspoken expectations. Through patient, kind reflection, you develop insight into how patterns developed, and how they can shift.

One size simply does not fit all.

Our goal is to foster trust, clarity, and meaningful change so both partners feel heard, understood, and empowered. To support this, we draw from a number of therapetuic modalities including the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy, a research-based approach that focuses on strengthening communication, building emotional intimacy, and reducing patterns of conflict or defensiveness. Through guided dialogue and targeted interventions, couples gain tools to navigate challenges and reconnect with empathy and respect.

We also integrate Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT), a short-term structured approach based on attachment theory. It employs a humanistic, experiential approach to restructure emotional experience, alongside a systemic approach to change negative interactions. EFCT has been researched utilized successfully with various couples facing challenges like depression, anxiety, or forgiveness dilemmas.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What is couples therapy and how can it help us?

Couples therapy is a supportive and collaborative process where you and your partner work with a therapist to better understand relationship patterns, improve communication, and build a deeper connection. It is not just for managing conflict, but to help strengthen your relationship.

2.  What happens in couples therapy sessions?

Early sessions focus on listening and creating space for both partners to feel seen and understood. Over time, sessions explore patterns that may keep you stuck and help you build new, healthier ways of interacting and connecting.

3.  How long does couples counselling take to work?

Every path is unique, and your therapist will discuss this during an initial free phone consultation or in your first session. For many couples, the initial conversation about what brings you in and how you are feeling can bring a sense of relief. Together with your therapist, you will come up with goals and gain tools to help navigate challenges.

4.  Will the therapist take sides or judge us?

Your therapist is there to help both of you understand each other and your relationship dynamics in a safe and supportive environment. They will remain neutral and will not take sides or judge either partner.

5.  Can we have sessions in-person or virtually?

Centre Wellness currently only offers in-person couples therapy. We have evening and weekend availability to help fit your needs and schedules.
