About Mayah

Mayah is a doctoral student therapist who approaches therapy with warmth, curiosity, and a strong commitment to understanding each client as an individual. She believes meaningful therapy begins by understanding what matters to the client; their goals, values, experiences, and the broader social and cultural context of their life. Rather than defining progress for her clients, Mayah works with them to identify what wellness and meaningful change look like for them. As she explains,

Mayah hopes therapy helps clients not only find relief from the difficulties that brought them in, but also develop greater confidence in themselves and their ability to navigate future challenges. She places particular importance on helping clients advocate for themselves, establish healthy boundaries, prioritize their well-being, and develop strategies they can carry into everyday life.

Therapeutic Style

Mayah describes herself as warm, approachable, and non-judgmental. She genuinely enjoys
getting to know her clients and strives to create an environment where they can feel comfortable
being themselves, including when discussing experiences they may not have felt safe sharing
elsewhere. Mayah recognizes,

Her approach is collaborative and responsive, with clients taking an active role in shaping their
goals and treatment. Mayah draws primarily from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and is
continuing to develop her skills in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical
Behaviour Therapy (DBT). She values evidence-based care while recognizing that treatment
needs to make sense for the individual receiving it. She shares that,

What to Expect

As therapy progresses, Mayah pays attention to both symptom change and the everyday signs
that clients are beginning to feel more capable. Progress might mean applying a strategy outside of therapy, communicating a boundary, advocating for a need, understanding an emotional response differently, or feeling increasingly confident managing a difficult situation.

In a first session with Mayah, clients can expect time to understand how therapy works, ask
questions, and begin exploring what has brought them to therapy. Mayah learns about their experiences, concerns, and goals while working with them to determine what support might be
most helpful. There is no expectation that clients arrive knowing exactly what they need. She shares,
Ultimately, Mayah hopes clients finish therapy feeling empowered to use what they have
learned in ways that continue to serve them long after therapy ends.

Professional Experience

Mayah’s clinical experience spans private clinics, school boards, and hospital-based settings,
where she has primarily worked with children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Her training includes psychoeducational assessment, risk assessment with adolescents involved
with the law, and autism-specific assessment.

As a doctoral student therapist, Mayah brings together her developing clinical expertise with a strong interest in research, advocacy, and culturally responsive care. Her research examines the physiological costs associated with coping with discrimination among Black emerging adults, and she is particularly interested in understanding how sociocultural context and social
determinants of health can inform clinical conceptualization and treatment. Mayah receives
direct supervision from a registered Clinical Psychologist at Centre Wellness, and remains actively engaged in learning evidence-based approaches to care.
